Heat pump rebates and renewable energy certificates.

Heat pumps can attract 2 different kinds of incentives - rebates and Renewable Energy Certficates (RECs), making a heat pump not only very environmentally friendly, but an extremely economical water heating solution!

$600 Federal government rebate for heat pumps

Under rebate changes announced by the Federal Government on February 19, 2010, Federal rebates of up to $600 are available for heat pumps installed to replace electric storage hot water systems in existing privately owned homes until March 2012. Unlike the previous scheme, the new program offers the rebate through the Medicare system rather than as a point of sale discount.

The system must eligible for at least 20 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) at the time and place of installation and be installed by a qualified installer. Other eligibility criteria:

  • The dwelling must be a principal place of residence.

  • The rebate must be applied for within 6 months of the heat pump being installed.

  • People renting are also eligible for the rebate, however the landlord's approval should be obtained.

  • Investment properties are also eligible, but must be the principle residence of the owner or of the renter.

  • Heat pumps installed on new houses are not eligible for the rebate, however, substantial Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) based discounts still apply (see below)

Heat pump Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

The following tables show the number of REC's (Renewable Energy Certificates) and their approximate value for commercial and domestic Quantum heat pumps and domestic Siddon heat pumps. Please note that values may vary in accordance with market conditions. RECs are available if the system is installed by a qualified plumber, which Energy Matters can provide.

Given the high number of REC that accompany heat pumps and other applicable solar hot water rebates, this means you can get a heat pump system at a very low price! If you assign the RECs to Energy Matters at the point of sale and elect to use an Energy Matters appointed plumber, we can incorporate their value into the final price! Our installation services usually cost between $400 and $500.

The number of RECs for each system differs depending on the amount of energy saved relative to an electric water heater installed in the same location. You'll notice that in the information below, REC assignment levels depend on "zones"; i.e., where you live. The following diagram shows the different zones throughout Australia.
