REC Solar Panels Chosen By Singapore’s Housing Development Board

Norway-based REC Group has announced its successful tender bid to supply REC solar panels for residential rooftop solar power systems for Singapore's Housing Development Board (HDB).

Norway-based REC Group has announced its successful tender bid to supply REC solar panels for residential rooftop solar power systems  for Singapore’s Housing Development Board (HDB).

REC competed against 13 other companies to supply panels to 6 HDB precincts. According to REC, this is the largest single solar panel procurement deal in Singapore to date.

The 1MW supply translates into enough panels for 25 housing blocks covering 1.5 times the size of a football field. Installation of the REC Peak Energy Series modules will begin in the fourth quarter of 2010.

REC says it has constructed one of the world’s most integrated and automated solar panel manufacturing facilities in Singapore, which will provide modules for the project. Approximately 1300 people are working at the site which will reach full production capacity of 740 MW for wafers, 550 MW for cells and 590 MW for solar panels by 2012. The official opening of the REC Singapore facility will take place in November 2010.

REC recently also made a splash closer to home, with Australian solar solutions provider Energy Matters announcing it had received its first shipment of REC Peak Energy solar panels, marking the beginning of REC modules being available for the Australian home solar power market.

According to REC, its Peak Energy Series solar panels offer more power per square metre than other leading brands and also boast an energy payback of just one year – the shortest of any module currently available on the market.

Founded in Norway, REC employs more than 3,000 people worldwide and had revenues of approximately EUR 1 billion in 2009.
