Port Pirie solar buyers scheme means households to reap rewards

Port Pirie Council

The Port Pirie solar scene will get a boost when households in the South Australian town will get solar power systems and batteries for $19-per-week under a new solar buyers program.

Port Pirie Council has announced it is now reviewing tenders for its Community Solar Project.

Council has hired Andy Chambers, from Seed Consulting Services, to decide on the best option for residents. He will consider system design, quality, and seek installation and warranty assurances before notifying the successful supplier.

Announced in September 2017, the buyers scheme called for expressions of interest (EOI) from Port Pirie residents about using solar power to cut electricity bills.

“Council recognises the cost of living is increasing, with electricity prices among those affecting our residents,” council said.

“This initiative aims to reduce these rising costs while supporting a move towards a carbon neutral region.”

Overwhelming response to Port Pirie solar buyers group

Over 750 households responded to the scheme, which will see homes fitted with solar panels and battery storage.

In an Aussie-first, residents can purchase a 5kW rooftop solar power system, plus battery storage, due to a low-cost payment plan.

The payment has been calculated at $19-per-week over a four-year period. A 5kW solar array, with storage, was judged adequate to power a four-person household.

Under the plan, homes with solar power can  choose a battery-only option.

The project included information sessions on energy efficiency and solar power by Planet Ark founder, Jon Dee.

Dee described the scheme as “the most innovative initiative I have seen in a decade”.

Solar buyers scheme explained

As electricity prices skyrocket, there’s never been a better time to invest in home solar energy. One way to acquire a solar PV system for less is to use the power of group buying and form a buyers group.

By collaborating with friends, neighbours and colleagues within a local area, a solar buyers group provides increased purchasing power.

Buying in bulk lowers prices on panels, inverters, and also batteries. In addition, enrolling in a solar buyers scheme means households  can install a residential solar photovoltaic system at well below market prices.

Energy Matters provides a premium solar buyers group program for councils, builders and households as well as neighbourhood associations.

Successful schemes include Adelaide (100 solar units), Bendigo, and also Mallacoota (approximately 100 systems).
