REC Completes 5MW UK Solar Farm Project

REC Systems, a division of Norway-based REC, has announced the successful completion, financing, sale and 25 year feed in tariff approval for the 5MW Durrants solar power plant situated on the Isle of Wight.

REC Systems, a division of Norway-based REC, has announced the successful completion, financing, sale and 25 year feed in tariff approval for the 5MW Durrants solar power plant situated on the Isle of Wight.

19,000 high performance REC Peak Energy modules have been installed at the facility, which is one of the largest solar electricity generation projects in the UK

The Durrants solar power plant will produce 5400 MWh of electricity and offset 3,500 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The facility will generate enough clean electricity to provide for the needs of 1,450 four person homes per year.

The Durrants project was sold to a fund managed by Bluefield Partners LLP.

REC also supplied its Peak Energy solar panels to the Ebbsfleet Solar Farm, situated on the site of the former Richborough Power Station in Kent. This facility covers an area of 12.5 hectares and is comprised of 20,400 REC photovoltaic modules.

Both facilities were fast tracked to mains grid connection stage to beat a UK feed in tariff deadline of August 1 last year.

“The sudden change in solar policy has brought challenges for large-scale developers in the UK. REC hopes that the government will provide a predictable framework to support the growing solar industry in the country”, said Terje Pilskog, SVP REC Systems.

REC solar panels have also become a common sight in Australia after Melbourne-based Energy Matters introduced the modules to the local home solar power market in 2010, entering into a 20MW purchase agreement with REC – one of the largest single solar panel supply agreements in Australian history at that time.

REC and its Peak Energy Series modules have received multiple awards, including the Solar Industry Award for Module Innovation. Field testing carried out by trade magazine Photon during January to June last year showed REC solar modules to have outperformed 46 other modules; producing 6 percent more power on average.
