Queensland takes the lead with electric vehicle strategy

New electric vehicles strategy falls short says EVC.

Queensland’s new electric vehicle strategy marks it as a truly ‘smart state’, a leading industry body claims.

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) says Queensland has jumped ahead of the rest of the nation with its ground-breaking policy.

‘The Future is Electric – preparing Queensland for Electric Vehicles’ details the numerous benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles.

The Queensland Government has joined the global movement towards electric vehicles, the EVC claims.

This worldwide trend also offers huge benefits to families, businesses, energy security, energy efficiency and the environment through renewable energy sources.

Electric vehicle strategy drives Queensland forward

The new policy includes a range of measures designed to bring the state into the electric age.

These policy measures include:

  • Creation of a Queensland Electric Super Highway network.
  • A regional charging rollout.
  • The transition of government vehicles to electric power.

However, Australia has trailed other world markets like China, France and the UK in embracing electric vehicles, according to the EVC.

While these countries have announced a ban on the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles, only 0.1 per cent of Australia’s new vehicle sales are electric.

Yet Queensland has signalled a change, says EVH CEO Behyad Jafari.

“Our research shows the majority of Australians would be willing to purchase an electric vehicle, but hesitate because they don’t know if the technology is supported by government and infrastructure,” he said.

“This plan removes that obstacle by sending an unambiguous message to the community and industry: Queensland supports the transition to electric vehicles. We implore the other states and the federal government to follow Queensland’s outstanding lead.”

Aims of Queensland’s electric vehicle strategy

The EVC strategy outlines 16 cost-effective programs to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles.

Collectively, these programs aim to:

  • Empower consumers to learn about this new technology and make informed choices.
  • Increase uptake of EVs by government, commercial fleets and community.
  • Improve EV model availability in Queensland and Australia.
  • Support efficient rollout of EV infrastructure.
  • Foster growth in EV technology innovation.

The policy also promotes recycling of used EV batteries. Those that can’t be repurposed for home battery storage can be recycled to make new ones.
