Fashion powered by renewable technology

Wearable technology has become all the rage. We can incorporate smart devices into our clothing that allows us access to music, news, entertainment and communication while we are on the move.

But what happens when these devices run out of charge? Companies worldwide have turned their brands into wearable power stations that allow you to charge your devices while on the move using renewable energy sources. There are even apparel options that will enhance your own strength.

Here are some of the best technologies on the market today.

Solar fashion

Many fashion labels and technology companies have banded together to make this a reality. World-renowned brand Tommy Hilfiger has teamed up with solar engineering company Pvilion to create a range of solar jackets with removable panels. This allows you to quickly charge your mobile phone or tablet while looking stylish at the same time.

Many brands incorporate solar panels in unique and fashionable ways, and this technology is only improving by the year.

Power up with wearable technology

California-based company Seismic released its line of clothes in 2018 that features micro-robotics to boost your strength. While you won’t be tossing cars around like Ironman, the fusion of clothing and technology promises to improve your strength and stability.

Co-founder Rich Mahoney said the apparel added 30 watts of power to each hip and the lower back to assist with various activities.

“We see a future where simply getting dressed in the morning can dramatically improve people’s lifestyles and expand what they are capable of accomplishing,” he said.

Low profile rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power the clothing.

Clothing that is powered by your sweat

Not keen on wearing solar panels? Worried having a battery woven into your clothing will be too hard to remember at laundry time?

How about clothing that can charge your devices using your sweat? Nano engineers at the University of California San Diego have created apparel with sweat-powered biofuel cells built into a mesh microgrid. The line of clothing also includes motion generators and energy-storing supercapacitors.

What about clothes that reflects the sun?

While these innovations are fantastic for energising up your commute or exercise routine, what about the times when you don’t want to be a walking magnet for the sun?

The Columbia Women’s Solar Chill 2.0 long-sleeve shirt is perfect for fishing, gardening or all of those other outdoor articles that will see you bathed in sunshine. It includes Omni-wick technology to keep you dry and tiny dots that will deflect the sun, keeping you cool and protected at all times. It is the shirt that comes with built-in UPF 50 sun protection so you can enjoy your time outdoors for as long as you like.
