SunEdison, Inc. (NYSE: SUNE) has announced the signing of an agreement to supply solar electricity to the New York data center of the world’s leading provider of business and financial information, news and insight, Bloomberg.
2.9 megawatts DC of solar energy will supply Bloomberg’s Rockland County facility; providing more than 5% of the data center’s electricity consumption and avoiding many thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide over the term of the agreement.
The power will be supplied via remote net metering, whereby the benefits of solar can be reaped without the need to install a system on site.
“With this project, we’re projecting to save more than $2 million over the life of the agreement versus traditional utility prices, and it helps us reach our sustainability and climate goals,” said Curtis Ravenel, Bloomberg’s global head of Sustainable Business and Finance. ” With SunEdison’s track record for delivering best-in-class solar projects, choosing them to support our critical data centers was easy.”
Construction of the solar facility is targeted for completion in towards the end of next year, with SunEdison Services providing ongoing operation and maintenance services.
“Data centers consume enormous amounts of energy and that can mean sky-high energy bills, but SunEdison solar solutions can help companies quickly reign in their energy costs,” said Steve Raeder, SunEdison’s regional general manager of its Eastern U.S. solar business.
In other recent SunEdison news, late last month the company completed construction of a 2MW solar farm for the town of Elkton in Maryland. Electricity generated by the plant will be sold under a 20 year solar power purchase agreement (solar PPA). The arrangement should save the town approximately USD $2 million over the next 20 years.
“This solar project is a major step forward in environmental preservation and energy savings for our town in more ways than one,” said Robert J. Alt, Mayor of the Town of Elkton.
SunEdison facilities throughout the world have collectively generated more than 12 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity so far.
