Guilt-free Upgrade

Upgrade your Solar System without sending your Old Solar Panels to Landfill

Do you already have solar installed on your home or business? Looking to upgrade?

Many home and business owners are reluctant to upgrade their existing solar PV systems due to the waste that is usually associated with the removal of old solar panels. You may have been an early adopter of solar, and the thought of your solar panels ending up in landfill has been the main barrier to upgrading.

Second Life Solar does just that; it gives your existing solar panels the opportunity to have a second life! This not only reduces your impact on the environment, but it gives you the opportunity to install new, high-quality, high-performing, and greater efficient solar panels.

Additionally, Second Life Solar will cover the cost of removing your old panels if you choose to add a new solar system.

In partnership with the CSIRO, the NSW Environment Protection Authority, and Energy Matters, Second Life Solar is proud to provide an alternative to existing solar customers.

How Second Life Solar Works

Second Life Solar works with the CSIRO to test and refurbish and redeploy or recycle old solar panels.

Solar Panels Second Life

Step 1

As you will be upgrading your existing solar system, one of our certified solar retailers will contact you to prepare a quote. They will factor in your current and future electricity consumption needs and provide a tailored quote.

Step 2

Once the quote is accepted, your old solar panels will be removed from your home or business for FREE.

These panels will be tested with technology developed by the CSIRO to ascertain the potential for a second life. The panels will be tested for efficiency and quality.

Your new system will be installed following the removal of your old system.

Step 3

If your old panels cannot be given a second life, they will be sent to a recycling facility that will recycle up to 100% of the materials.

Panels that have been granted a second life will be installed in a solar garden, for use on locations such shopping centres.

Did you know?

The City of Newcastle is home to 168,873 residents.

As of 2022, there are 12,440 City of Newcastle residents with solar. The combined generation capacity (KWp – kilowatt peak) is 60,414! The average size solar system is 4.8kW.

With 74,579 dwellings and 12,440 solar systems, only 16.7% of residents have gone solar – which is much lower than the national average of 29%.

Residents receive an average of 5.3 peak sun hours (per square meter) every day! That’s 5.3 hours of solar potential.

Are you looking to upgrade your old system but don't want to impact the environment?

Many Newcastle residents were early adopters of solar. The small size of the system, coupled with aging technology and reduced efficiency, will likely be cause to upgrade and replace the solar system.

Through extensive research with the NSW EPA, the CSIRO, and the local council, we have found that the greatest barrier for the replacement of aging technology is the potential environmental impact the solar system would have when removed and sent to landfill.

Guilt-free upgrade

Second Life Solar is offering City of Newcastle residents the opportunity to recycle their old solar panels.

The solar panels will be removed from your roof for FREE and taken to a testing lab to see if the panels can be utilised in a community solar system. Panels assessed to be functional will be installed in solar projects that can often be seen on places like shopping centres. Here, the panels will produce electricity that will not only benefit the environment but potentially provide you with an ongoing income.

Any panels that are not fit for redeployment will be sent to a recycling facility where up to 100% of the panels will be recycled.

Community solar

How it works

A fully accredited, Second Life Solar-approved solar installer will provide you a quote for a new solar system. If the quote is accepted, the installer will remove the old panels and then install your new system. The old panels will be tested by CSIRO systems to assess their viability. Viable panels will be reinstalled on a solar community project. Non-viable panels will be recycled.

What next?

Join us at one of the information evenings where we will discuss the different options available to you, including the option to select from an affordable or premium solar package, add battery storage, and either pay cash or jump onto a ZERO upfront payment plan. All solar systems will be installed by an approved local solar installer.
