Fox ESS L Series EV Charger warranty

The Fox ESS L Series comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. As with any EV charger, buyers should check the warranty period and coverage with their installer, as terms and support quality may vary across regions.

Pros of the Fox ESS L Series EV Charger

  • Ultra-compact and lightweight: At just 196 x 197 mm and around 4kg, it’s one of the smallest chargers around and fits neatly into tight garages and carports.
  • Works without internet: Bluetooth lets you start and control charging from your phone even if your home Wi-Fi drops out.
  • Simple to use: Plug & Charge mode means you can just plug in your car and charging starts automatically, with no card or app needed.
  • Comprehensive safety protection: Built-in DC leakage detection, PEN fault protection, tamper protection and surge protection keep drivers and vehicles safe.
  • Certified for Australia: RCM certification confirms it meets Australian electrical safety and compliance requirements.
  • Longer cable option: An optional 6m cable gives extra reach for driveways and carports where your car’s charging port is further away.

Cons of the Fox ESS L Series EV Charger

  • External RCCB required: An external residual current circuit breaker must be installed, adding to installation costs.
  • No OCPP support: The L Series can’t connect to third-party charging management platforms, which limits its use for businesses and shared car parks.
  • No RFID access control: Without an RFID reader, there’s no simple way to restrict who can use the charger.
  • Limited connectivity: It supports only Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, with no Ethernet or 4G option for garages with weak Wi-Fi.
  • Tethered cable only: There’s no socket version, so you can’t use your own cable or swap to a different length later.
  • Three-phase needed for 11kW: The L11P requires three-phase power, so most Australian homes on single-phase will be limited to 7.3kW.

Applications for the Fox ESS L Series EV Charger

The Fox ESS L Series is well-suited to a range of Australian charging scenarios:

  • Homes with solar: Ideal for households that want to charge their EV with surplus solar during the day and cut running costs.
  • Single-EV households: A practical, affordable fit for homes with one EV and straightforward charging needs.
  • Townhouses and small garages: Its compact size suits tight spaces where a larger charger would get in the way.
  • First-time EV owners: A simple option for drivers who want reliable home charging without complicated setup.

Is the Fox ESS L Series EV Charger right for you?

The L Series is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it fits certain types of users particularly well.

It’s ideal if you:

  • Have rooftop solar and want to charge your EV with your own clean energy
  • Want a simple charger you can plug in and forget about
  • Have limited space in your garage or carport
  • Want to charge during off-peak hours to save on electricity costs
  • Don’t need advanced features like RFID access or third-party platform integration

Consideration for businesses and advanced users:

If you need OCPP support, RFID access control or wired internet, the L Series may not be enough. The Fox ESS L Max or A Series offer these features, and the A Series also comes in a 22kW three-phase version.
