Art Deco Meets Modern in Episode 3 of Open Homes Australia

In the latest episode of Open Homes Australia, host Bec Douros takes viewers on a tour of a stunning modern art deco home located in the coastal suburb of Black Rock in Melbourne. Homeowner Cait accompanies Bec as they explore the unique design elements of the property.

Modern art deco design

The exterior of the home features classic art deco curved corners and bold lines that draw the eye to the stunning windows framing the grand chandelier inside. Stepping through the front door, it’s clear that the home was designed with a nod to the 1920s, with arched doorways, a grand staircase, and furniture pieces that blend the old with the new. The Great Gatsby-inspired lines and style run throughout the home, tying the art deco theme together.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights provide ample natural light throughout the living spaces, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The lower basement level of the home boasts a unique feature: a window into the pool that’s sure to impress guests. The pool is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, making it a perfect communal space for entertaining.

The home was designed and constructed by Lowe Design & Build, with Matt Lowe explaining that the property’s unique blend of modern and art deco design is likely to make it a landmark in the area.

Sustainable design and technology

Cait shared that the home is equipped with a large solar system and battery storage, which has greatly reduced their electricity bills by allowing them to shift their power usage to daytime hours when the sun is shining. This is especially important given that the family has three young children and their electricity demands are likely to increase as the kids get older.

The property also features double-glazed windows, LED lighting, and an impressive solar and battery system. The solar system includes a Fronius Symo inverter and a Tesla Powerwall battery, with plans to add an electric vehicle in the future. Roshan, our CEO, explained the importance of choosing renewable energy technology as our country moves towards a zero-carbon future.
