SEA’s Sustainable Energy Vision For Western Australia

Last week, the Sustainable Energy Association of Australia (SEA) released its policy position ahead of the Western Australian State Election on March 9, 2013.

“Creating a sustainable energy future for Western Australia” was based on the views of the SEA’s 300 members who responded to a survey regarding what action they would like to see from Western Australia’s next State Government.

The five key recommendations:

1. Adopt a state-based renewable energy target

20% by 2020 and aiming for at least 30% renewable energy generation by 2030.

2. Reduce barriers to commercial self-generation

Implement a buy-back scheme to reduce business costs and allow a reasonable payment for exported energy.

3. Commit government to purchase a set amount of renewable energy generation

The SEA states this would provide leadership and stimulate development.

4. Accelerate improvements to Western Australia’s public transport

This will reduce emissions, ease congestion and transition to a low-carbon economy.

5. Support the roll out of smart meters

The SEA believes this will help businesses and consumers manage their energy costs and lay the foundation for a smarter grid.

“We are very pleased to be able to put forward comprehensive, yet succinct sustainable energy priorities for the WA State Government,” said Chief Executive Kirsten Rose who also stated other recent research has found 90% of Perth respondents believe the State’s energy should come from a renewable source.

The SEA says businesses in Western Australia are looking for certainty around Government support for renewable energy.
