New Subsidy For Solar Power In The Northern Territory

Solar Power Subsidy - Northern Territory

The Northern Territory Government’s new $20 million Home Improvement Scheme is offering generous financial assistance to Territorians wanting to install solar panels.

Fully launched just a few days ago, the Scheme has already attracted a huge amount of interest.

Eligible NT homeowner-occupiers can receive vouchers of up to $2,000 (excluding GST) to go towards home improvements, repairs or maintenance works – including the purchase of solar power systems and battery storage.

A major condition of the program is registered local small businesses or tradepersons must carry out the work. One of the businesses registered for the scheme is Energy Matters partner, Country Solar NT.

Darwin owned and operated, Country Solar NT is the largest solar company in the Northern Territory and was a winner in last year’s Telstra Business Awards

According to Energy Matters, a good quality solar power system featuring Enphase Energy Storage installed in Darwin can provide a financial benefit of around $1,730 a year; depending on installation and power consumption scenario.

Under the Home Improvement Scheme, projects must be less than $20,000 and the homeowner needs to contribute at least half. The voucher value depends on the size of the project and is valid for 3 months after the date of issue.

Full details of the scheme and a voucher calculator can be viewed here.

The Northern Territory’s government is very pleased with the initial progress of the Scheme.

“The overwhelming response to this initiative just goes to show it is precisely what Territory small businesses and residents needed,” said NT Minister for Business Peter Styles.

“I am receiving feedback from businesses that they are experiencing the benefits of the scheme through an influx of quote requests and now it will be tools up, as the real work gets underway.”

The scheme was to run from 1 July 2016 through to 30 June 2017 or until the $20 million grant pool was used, but the Territory’s Chief Minister has indicated he will extend the program and boost funding if the economy still requires it.

The State Government says the $20 million direct investment is expected to have an estimated $67 million in flow-on benefits for the Northern Territory’s economy.
