Energy Matters has been assisting Bupa Aged Care services attain ambitious carbon reduction goals through the use of solar installations on dozens of Bupa sites across Australia.
Based on its 2009 carbon footprint, Bupa aims to achieve a 30% CO2 reduction by 2020. Key to achieving these aims has been the deployment of onsite renewables and staff engagement.
Energy Matters first developed a business case to support Bupa in attaining their goals with solar before. A six month program was then launched to install Phase 1 -3 of what would be Australia’s largest distributed commercial solar project; followed by phases 4, 5 and 6 that saw additional capacity installed.
Using REC 260W, Yingli 250W and Daqo 250W solar panels, Fronius and ABB inverters plus SunLock mounting systems across all arrays, Energy Matters again demonstrated its industry-leading Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) capabilities.
The 53 systems now in place represent 4.5 MW+ of solar capacity that is expected to generate approximately 5,500 megawatt hours of clean electricity in the first full year of operation. The solar arrays will avoid thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions annually and save Bupa Aged Care millions in electricity costs over the life of the project.
The arrangement with Bupa Aged Care also involves Energy Matters Australia providing maintenance and monitoring of all systems as part of an ongoing performance guarantee arrangement.
“This is the most successful portfolio deployment in BUPA’s history,” said Mathew Heggie, Previous Chief Engineer, Bupa Aged Care Services. “We cannot fault the management and execution of this project”.
In August 2015, Bupa’s solar power rollout in Australia was recognised in the Australian Business Awards 2015. Bupa was named the ABA100 Winner in the Sustainability category.

BUPA Aged Care is taking the lead with strong environmental aims and has recognised the value of solar in achieving these. Beyond the benefits of energy savings across Australia’s largest solar PV portfolio, the company will reap the rewards of their commitment to environmental stewardship in terms of economic returns and hedging against the rising cost of power.
