What are South Australiaโ€™s smart inverter rules?

South Australia has more rooftop solar per capita than almost anywhere else in the world. Thatโ€™s great for clean energy, but it creates a real challenge for grid stability. On sunny, mild days, the grid can receive far more solar power than it can handle.

To manage this, SA Power Networks (SAPN) introduced new smart inverterย requirements for new and upgraded solar systems. These rules are part of the stateโ€™s โ€œSmarter Homesโ€ regulatory framework and are designed to give the grid more control over how much solar energy flows back into it at any given moment.

The rules cover things like internet-connected inverters, remote disconnection capability, voltage ride-through standards, and โ€“ most recently โ€“ a feature called Flexible Exports.

What are Flexible Exports, and why does it matter?

Flexible Exports is SAPNโ€™s smart system for managing how much solar energy your inverter can send back to the grid. Instead of a fixed cap โ€“ like the old 5kW limit โ€“ it uses a dynamic range.

Under Flexible Exports, your system can export between 0 and 10kW per phase, depending on the local network’s capacity at that moment. On a quiet day with low solar activity, you might export at the full 10kW. On a peak spring day when every rooftop is generating, your limit might drop to 1.5kW or lower โ€“ automatically, without any action from you.

This adjustment happens in real time, through your inverterโ€™s internet connection. SAPN sends signals directly to compatible smart inverters across the state.

Since 1 July 2023, Flexible Exports has been mandatory for all new solar systems installed in South Australia. It has now rolled out statewide, including rural and SWER (single-wire earth-return) line areas.

What changed and when: A timeline of SA smart inverter rules

Understanding the timeline helps you figure out exactly where your system sits.

  1. September 2020: SAPNโ€™s new technical standard (TS129) came into effect. New solar systems had to include internet-connected inverters, support remote disconnection, and meet undervoltage ride-through (LVRT) requirements.
  2. July 2021: Dynamic export control requirements were added for new installs.
  3. July 2023: Flexible Exports became mandatory for all new exporting solar systems installed in SA.
  4. 2024โ€“2025: Flexible Exports was rolled out statewide, including rural SWER areas. The July 2025 update increased the inverter capacity allowance on SWER lines from 5 kVA to 10 kVA.

Is your existing solar system grandfathered?

The short answer is yes, but there are vital conditions you must understand. If your solar energy system was installed and approved before July 2023, your existing setup is grandfathered. 

Is your existing solar system grandfathered under the new rules?

This is the question most SA homeowners with an existing system are asking. The good news is that, in most cases, older systems are not immediately forced to comply with the new smart inverter rules.

SA Power Networks confirms that existing solar customers remain on their current export arrangements until they upgrade or replace their system. In other words, your current setup is effectively grandfathered โ€“ for now.

The South Australian Government also confirmed that the new standards only apply to existing systems โ€œif any declared part of the existing system is being replacedโ€ โ€“ excluding warranty repairs. This means:

  • Keep using your current system as-is โ€“ the new smart inverter rules do not apply retroactively.
  • Replace your inverter with a different model โ€“ the new rules kick in. Your replacement inverter must comply with the current standards.
  • Like-for-like warranty replacement โ€“ same manufacturer and model โ€“ is exempt from the new requirements.
  • Upgrade or expand your system โ€“ the new rules apply to the upgraded portion and may affect your whole systemโ€™s connection agreement.

What happens if you upgrade or replace your solar system?

This is where most homeowners need to pay attention. If your existing solar system is working fine and youโ€™re not planning to change anything, you can continue as normal under the old rules.
