Battery Forum To Energize Australian Residential Storage

Battery Forum - Australia

A national forum on residential battery storage is being held at the ACT  Legislative Assembly today.

Part of the forum’s aim is find strategies to boost the uptake of home battery systems, plus help identify barriers and solutions to those challenges.

“The National Battery Storage Skills and Safety Forum being held today is an opportunity for jurisdictional regulators to bring together different perspectives on safety, regulation, and training for the future of battery storage,” said Minister for the Environment Simon Corbell.

“Residential battery storage is expected to increase dramatically over the next ten years. A recent CSIRO Future energy storage trends report found that energy storage could transform traditional energy markets allowing much higher penetration of renewable energy across the grid. A number of storage companies are already active in the ACT market and rapid growth is expected in 2016.”

The forum is being held in collaboration with  the Commonwealth Department of Industry and Queensland Department of Energy and Water Supply. Mr. Corbell said the forum will inform future actions of the COAG Energy Council. The next meeting of the Council is in December.

Since the CSIRO’s report (PDF) in September; other forecasts have predicted massive growth in home battery uptake throughout the nation.

A report from the Climate Council in October states half of all households in Australia are predicted to install solar + battery systems.

A recent report from GTM Research forecasts a huge jump in the Australian energy storage sector next year; from just 1.9 megawatts in 2015 to 44 megawatts in 2016. By 2020, GTM predicts Australia will reach 244 megawatts of annual installed capacity.

A good chunk of this will be attributable to the residential sector; from both new solar + storage installations and some of the 1.4 million-plus households with solar panels in Australia deciding to upgrade their systems.

Some of the world’s leading battery manufacturers have chosen Australia to be among the first markets to receive their next-generation storage systems; including Tesla (Tesla Powerwall) and Enphase Energy (Enphase AC Battery). Australia is a particularly attractive market given its level of PV saturation and high electricity costs.
