Avatar 2 And 3 Movies To Be Solar Powered (Video)

Lightstorm Entertainment Inc. will be making further Avatar movies using electricity generated by solar energy.

Lightstorm Entertainment Inc. will be making further Avatar movies using electricity generated by solar energy.

Stellar Energy installed a 959.92 kW roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) power system for the company, consisting of nearly 3,700 solar panels.

Designed to generate 1,500,000 kWh of clean electricity per year, it is allowing the filmmakers to achieve a goal of a 100% solar powered Avatar 2 and 3

The system will avoid over 1,034 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the equivalent to taking 203 passenger vehicles off the road.

Avatar director James Cameron said he heard the criticism concerning the first movie – while Avatar had a strong environmental theme, the production was an energy intensive exercise – and he decided to do something about it.

The installation was no small feat – in addition to the solar panel arrays needing to be installed on barrel shaped roofs, the project occurred in a very active studio environment, where noise and other interruptions were simply not an option.

Stellar Energy coordinated with studio management to ensure the construction did not interfere with the active filming of television and movies and installation crews would stop and start on different roofs as directed by the studio.

Stellar Energy’s engineers designed a custom, elevated solar panel mounting system for the non-standard roof, allowing the maximum number of solar modules to be installed at an optimum angle and orientation for maximum electricity production.

Another recent Stellar Energy project was the 454 Kilowatt (kW) array at Jordan Vineyard & Winery in Healdsburg, California consisting of 1,932 solar modules.

Commercial solar power systems are becoming increasingly common; not only as part of corporate environmental initiatives, but as a way for companies to rein in rapidly increasing electricity costs.

Closer to home, The Big Strawberry recently went solar with a solar panel array installed by Energy Matters.
