Sun Sizzled Snags In 10 Minutes – The Solar Dogger

GoSun solar dogger

It’s probably no threat to the conventional sausage sizzle hotplate and Weber mightn’t be shaking in its boots, but the Solar Dogger seems to be generating a bit of interest.

We first covered GoSun cookers back in 2013, and the company appears to have been doing well since then.

Among its wide range of solar cooking products is the new Solar Dogger; a flame- free way of cooking tubular meat treats.

Using the same vacuum tube and compound parabolic reflector technology as other GoSun products, the company says it can cook a couple of hot dogs or sausages in around 10 minutes.

A multi-position base and kickstand enables efficient capture of sunlight at various angles and GoSun claims it will also work on cloudy days; but of course this will impact on cooking times.

An interesting feature of the Dogger is the outside of the stove generally remains cool to touch while the inside can reach temperatures exceeding 280C.

It’s a very compact device; measuring 35cm long, 18cm wide and 8cm tall when closed and weighs just 1.1 kilograms.

GoSun claims the devices is easy to clean, “even for a dirty hippy” (sic).

View the Solar Dogger in action – the GoSun team have made Danoz ads look quite laid-back and they get full marks for enthusiasm.

“This campaign is pretty loud; we don’t want to be taken too seriously,” says GoSun.

The cooking tray of the Solar Dogger only has a diameter of 3cm, so while it wouldn’t be suitable for some thick sausages, thin snags will fit in fine.

You can pre-order a SolarDogger for around AUD $77 + delivery as part of an IndieGoGo crowd-funder. Another version, the Solar Dogger Plus, also includes some added goodies to turn it into an educational kit.

Assuming the campaign goes smoothly, GoSun expects commercial rollout in December this year.

GoSun’s full range of solar cooking products can be viewed here – there’s even a commercial scale solar oven available.

Perhaps we’ll see rows of Solar Doggers appearing outside Bunnings on Saturday and Sunday mornings in the not too distant future.
