Solar Inverter Manufacturer Scorecard

Solar inverter manufacturer scorecard

SMA, SolarEdge, Sungrow and ABB have all been recognised as solar inverter sector leaders in IHS’s PV Inverter Supplier Scorecard – 2016.

Usually when solar inverter manufacturers are ranked, it’s based on megawatt or revenue market share.

This IHS Scorecard is based on nine different metrics to arrive at overall scores for market presence and market momentum. These manufacturers are considered by IHS to be well- established in a wide range of markets, with strong brands and financial results, and are well positioned for growth in the future.

SMA scored the highest on market presence, with ABB and Sungrow also faring well, recording consistently high scores for all categories.

“This diverse group of companies has effectively overcome challenges, to position themselves at the forefront of the market,” said  Sam Wilkinson, senior manager, solar research at IHS Technology.

Enphase also gained a favourable mention, scoring highly for market momentum. It was named as part of a group of ‘Challengers’ in the scorecard report.

SMA, SolarEdge and Sungrow also were also named as leaders in a May 2016 IHS report relating to revenue.

SMA  has more than 3,00 employees in 20 countries. Last year it had sales of around 1 billion euros. In the first quarter of this year, the company increased its sold SMA solar inverter output by 21.3% to 2.1 gigawatts.

In addition to inverters, SolarEdge also produces optimizers. Since beginning commercial shipments in 2010, SolarEdge has shipped approximately 2.5 Gigawatt (GW) of its DC optimized inverter systems. Its products have been installed in more than 90 countries, including Australia. SolarEdge’s StorEdge product is currently the leading solution in Australia for the Tesla Powerwall battery system.

Sungrow has had a significant local impact. It reportedly had the largest market share in Australia of all Chinese solar inverter manufacturers last year. Sungrow solar inverters have grown in popularity as a result of their feature set combined with a low price tag.

Enphase is the world’s leading manufacturer of microinverters. 10 million+ Enphase microinverters have been shipped to date. The company recently branched out into energy storage with the much-anticipated Enphase battery system; due to arrive on Australian shores very soon.

ABB solar inverters cover the complete gamut of inverter types, from small micro-inverters and single/three-phase string units; up to megawatt-capacity central inverters

ABB, SMA, SolarEdge, Sungrow and Enphase products are available in Energy Matters’ extensive range of solar power systems.
