The Other Allan Jones – Renewable Energy Expert

It's a name more frequently associated with climate change and clean energy ignorance, but the other Allan Jones is a greenhouse gas reduction guru and renewables expert.

Electricity features heavily in the City’s greenhouse gas footprint – around 80%. This is primarily due to electricity being sourced from coal fired power stations in the Hunter Valley where two-thirds of the energy produced is wasted in the form of heat at the point of production and in transmission through line loss.

Allan Jones is heading the charge to help the City Of Sydney realise its goal of 30% renewable energy and 70% local trigeneration by 2030.

Mr. Jones is overseeing the tendering, procurement and rollout processes associated with all the programs working towards the City’s goal.

Mr. Jones’ previous work includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% in the English borough of Woking and helping to slash London’s carbon footprint.

A pioneer of Combined Heat and Power (CHP); in 1999, Mr. Jones was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s honours list for services to energy and water efficiency. According to Wikipedia, Mr. Jones is also credited with the removal of the regulatory barriers to decentralised energy in the UK.

The City’s solar photovoltaics project is the largest building-mounted solar PV program in Australia. When complete, the solar panels combined will cover more than 12,000m2 and will have a total solar electricity generation capacity of 1,250kWp.

Trigeneration is more than twice as energy efficient as coal power stations as it utilise the waste heat from electricity production in both heating and cooling. Having distributed trigeneration in place locally would also greatly reduce line loss.

The City believes enough renewable gases and fuels needed to displace natural gas for trigeneration could be sourced from renewable feedstocks within 250km of the city.

Other initiatives by the City include building energy and water efficiency retrofits and LED street and public domain lighting.
