Energy Matters executed a 53 kWp solar PV system project on the awardwinning Building 7 at Box Hill TAFE, Victoria.

The building was a 6000 m², four-level project with an Integrated Technology Hub (ITH) designed to educate Victoria’s future mechanical services trade apprentices. The Australian Government supported the construction of Building 7 under the Education Investment Fund.

The ITH provides world-class facilities within a structure designed to achieve 5-star Green Star accreditation.

Building 7 won the coveted Master Builders Association Excellence in Construction Projects award in the $30m to $80m category.

Using 212 tier-one REC 250W solar panels and 4 SMA Sunny TriPower inverters, the system played an important role in winning the award.

Other highlights of the solar PV system include an SMA monitoring platform linked directly to a building management system. This mounting subframe provides a flexible module layout and optimal northward tilt for maximum yield, along with a SunLock channel for cable routing back to the backbone tray.

The project site was extremely busy. In addition to the solar PV installation, construction works involved demolishing the existing car park, relocating essential services, and upgrading the existing electrical kiosk. Complex mechanical services were provided with an alternative system for each level (educational requirement).

Additionally, service bar reticulation systems, complex wall and ceiling linings, façade systems, access road, bike pods and external works were carried out.

Amid all this activity, Energy Matters delivered the system to strict deadlines, with limited roof access, while coordinating with countless other trades working on site for walkways, roof works, and handrails.

The system may be accessed on the roof for educational purposes, and there was adequate walkway access to support ongoing maintenance and cleaning.
