Intel Corporation has completed nine solar electric installations at Intel campuses in four states; altogether generating 3.8 million kilowatt hours of solar energy annually.

Intel first announced its plans to construct nine solar farms early last year. All projects are now complete, including an impressive 1 megawatt solar facility that covers nearly 2 hectares of land on Intel’s campus in Folsom, California. Most recent to be completed are installations at Hillsboro at its Jones Farm administrative campus and a system at the Ronler Acres manufacturing site.

The company says each solar panel array in its portfolio is among the 10 largest solar installations in its respective utility region.

The chip manufacturer says its portfolio also includes wind power, geo-thermal energy and, small hydro-electric and biomass sources.

In the last decade, Intel has plowed over $45 million into improving energy efficiency and resource conservation; in the process saving approximately 790 million kilowatt hours of electricity; enough to power close to 69,000 average American homes for a year.

Intel Corporation also recently announced it would purchase 2.5 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy credits (RECs) this year; a 75 percent increase over its 2010 commitment of 1.43 billion kilowatt hours. The level of RECs translates to over 85 percent of Intel’s estimated electricity needs in the United States for 2011.

For the 7th year in a row, Intel has also been named in the list of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations by Corporate Knights; ranking number 6. Johnson & Johnson, another company to embrace solar power, was ranked number 2.
