SunPower Corp. has announced three power purchase agreements with Southern California Edison for the supply of of 711 megawatts (MW) of solar power, which will see three new major solar farms constructed.

The SunPower solar panel based solar farms will be built at locations in Rosamond and Los Banos, California. Southern California Edison estimates the 711-MW capacity will generate the electricity requirements equivalent of more than 460,000 average California homes.

The first solar farm will have 110 MW capacity and be situated at Los Banos. It is expected to be operational by the end of 2014. The other two power generating facilities of 325 MW and 276 MW capacity will be constructed at Rosamond and are scheduled to be operation by October 2016.

In addition to high efficiency 425 watt SunPower solar panels, the solar farms will also utilise the company’s SunPower T0 Tracker system, which moves the panels to follow the sun during the day, providing up to 25 percent more solar energy harvesting compared to fixed-tilt solar panel mounting systems. SunPower’s Tracker Monitoring and Control System will also be utilised for wireless control of the power plants.

In other recent news from SunPower, the company announced last week the sale of its 13-megawatt Solare Roma solar farm to Allianz Renewable Energy Partners IV Ltd . The 13-MW facility is located in the municipality of Anguillara, Province of Rome, Lazio region, Italy.

In late December, SunPower also completed the sale of its 44-megawatt (MW) Montalto di Castro facility, Italy’s largest solar farm.
