In Saturday’s episode of Energy Matters, host James Treble engaged with Toby Dean from Nightingale Housing and Fairley Batch from Breathe to explore the innovative design of Nightingale 1. Nightingale Housing builds sustainable housing projects. Each one is built according to firm principles using clever solutions. Their discussion highlighted how the building fosters a strong sense of community, promotes communal living, reduces energy consumption, and emphasises sustainable construction practices. To help them reach their sustainability goals, Nightingale partners with Momentum Energy. James and Toby also delved into how Momentum Energy bridges the gap left by solar installations, heat pumps, and passive design by ensuring that any additional electricity requirements drawn from the grid are matched with renewable energy.
Cam Taylor, from Momentum Energy, provided us with some insights into the benefits of Momentum’s Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) and told us about why the companies are working together and how they’re supporting Nightingale’s sustainability goals. As an early adopter of Momentum’s CPPA, Nightingale is a prime example of how businesses and corporations can bridge the gap in spaces where drawing from the grid is unavoidable.
Momentum Energy is a proudly Australian-owned energy retailer, with offices based in Victoria and Tasmania. They are wholly owned by Hydro Tasmania, the nation’s largest generator of renewable energy. This unique relationship allows Momentum to offer electricity plans that support the growth of renewable energy in Australia. Momentum also offers its customers the option to match their usage with up to 100% GreenPower-accredited renewable electricity. Momentum’s dedication to renewable energy has earned them recognition, including a 4.5-star rating in Greenpeace’s 2022 Green Electricity Guide.
Momentum Energy offers CPPAs, which are long-term contracts that allow businesses to purchase renewable energy directly from generators. These agreements typically have a minimum term of two years and offer flexible consumption thresholds, making it easier for businesses to match their energy usage with renewable sources. By entering into a CPPA, businesses can secure stable energy prices and gain valuable marketing benefits by showcasing their support for renewable energy. Momentum’s CPPAs are designed to be flexible and accessible, encouraging more businesses to participate in the transition to a renewable energy future.
One notable source of renewable energy for Momentum’s CPPAs is the Granville Harbour Wind Farm, located on Tasmania’s west coast. This wind farm features 31 Vestas wind turbines with a total capacity of 111.6 MW and became fully operational in December 2020.
