Episode 7 of Energy Matters brought us new ways of approaching solar, battery storage, and recycling.
We journeyed inside the University of Wollongong to find out more about their big battery project, Virtual Solar Sharing, and Virtual Power Plants with Momentum Energy. James visited a South Aussie IGA to check out the enormous GoodWe battery and solar installation saving them thousands. Roshan found out that there’s more to milk bottles than meets the eye with a visit to Procal Dairies and their all-new Popit recycling machine. And we met a renter who has taken her electricity woes into her own hands. Find out how a Solis hybrid inverter makes going solar as a renter possible.

Composting food waste is a fantastic way to reduce landfill and to feed your garden. Coco shows us how easy it can be with a home compost bin and the scraps leftover from her family’s daily meals and coffee. Once the scraps have decomposed, they can be added to your garden for a sustainable boost!
The small steps we take each day can have a lasting and profound impact on the environment. What can you implement in your home or business to reduce your impact?
This episode was truly fascinating! It certainly excites me when I see the projects and innovation that is coming from all corners of our country.
James, the lucky man he is, was able to visit the impressive campus buildings at the University of Wollongong. The extensive research projects across the university guzzle an enormous amount of energy every year. I can’t wait to see how much the batteries will make a difference. Momentum’s VSS and VPP are a fantastic way for the uni to really maximise the batteries.
GoodWe, the manufacturer that holds a special place in my heart, rolled out the red carpet for James at the Morphett Vale IGA. Nik and Daniel, the store managers, demonstrated how businesses can truly benefit from investing in solar and battery storage. Electricity prices keep on going up and the only way businesses can stay on top is if they choose to take hold of there energy future.
I visited the home of Energy Matters’ Media and Communications Manager, Nicole, and found out that she’s not crazy, after all! Nicole told me her plan to add solar to the home she is renting a while back and I simply couldn’t believe that she was expecting a return on investment in under 3 years. Seeing it all with my own eyes, chatting with the team at Solis, and crunching the numbers showed me that renters really can go solar. While it might not be for everyone, those that can should absolutely investigate it. You could end up saving thousands.
Finally, Popit blew my mind! The innovation and ingenuity required to fit a complex recycling process into two small-ish machines was mind-boggling. The dairy industry needs a shake up. Finding out that ALL of their plastic milk bottles are made from new plastic was saddening and maddening. Popit is bound for great things and I’m so glad that we have been able to capture their first steps.
I can’t believe we’re almost at the finish line. Episode 8, our final episode for season 1, will be up next. See you next week.
