VELA Carport ‘Game Changer’ for residential homes with roof limitations & special rural applications

GoodWe BIPV has launched two case studies to demonstrate the growing capability of its VELA series Residential Solar Carport, as the product continues to build momentum in both suburban and rural Australia. Introduced to overcome homes with too few roofs, or rising energy demands, the VELA carport has emerged as a smart option in comparison to traditional rooftop and ground-mounted PV systems – adding extra generation space, becoming EV ready, and turning your driveway/yards into an extension of an electrified lifestyle that integrates batteries right from a simple charge point off the driveway or yard.

GoodWe is a unit of the global solar technology manufacturer, and the BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaics) division has experienced increasing popularity with the VELA series from residential customers in Australia and New Zealand since launching in late 2023. The modular structure offers residential customers the choice of 4.8kW (single) and 8.0kW (double) that incorporates the company’s Polaris bifacial BIPV panels.

“Lots of people misunderstand the concept that a 6.6kW rooftop system can’t fully recharge a 50kWh battery”, said Apollo Chai, senior Business Development Director for GoodWe BIPV. “VELA allows a way for residents to access something beyond roof limitations, to use their driveway, backyard or even a paddock to access additional solar energy.”

From hillside to horse paddock: The value of multi-use design

In Gold Coast’s countryside, a client collaborated with ReGenEV on an 8 kW VELA double solar carport, given that they had exhausted their rooftop PV options. Built with a Gamcorp certified frame, waterproof structural wrap, and adjustable pole heights, it could be constructed without heavy equipment. It was engineered for the climatic wind loads and UV loading present in Queensland. The carport generates energy for daily needs, EV charging and future battery storage, all from the client’s driveway.

“VELA has been designed to integrate battery storage effortlessly,” said Chai. “It’s a clean, modular solution that can change under-utilised space into an energy hub when energy demand is increasing.”

Meanwhile, the homeowner in Wonga Park, VIC worked with EVtech on a unique challenge, which there are lots of land but not enough rooftop access to solar, and an appetite to repurpose an under-utilised land. The result was a VELA 8kW carport, installed over the horse paddock. Now there is shade for the animals, clean solar energy for the home, and the owner was also able to claim small-scale technology certificates (STCs) and asset depreciation under Australian tax.

Our VELA Solar Carport is designed to support seamless battery storage integration, enabling homeowners to store excess solar energy and power their EVs directly from the driveway. Whether you’re dealing with aging roofs, structural limits or increasing EV and battery storage demand, GoodWe’s VELA Residential Solar Carports offer powerful alternatives.
