The weekend saw a series of BBQ’s organised by 100% Renewable to celebrate the popularity of solar in various towns and suburbs.

As well as a celebration,  Australia’s first ever Summer Solar BBQ served to raise awareness of the benefits of going solar.

“Still many politicians, journalists and the public still don’t know about the million-plus solar homes, the plummeting cost of solar systems and the role that rooftop panels can play in reducing electricity bills,” states the 100% Renewable web site.

Solar owners across the country cranked up their barbies and told their solar stories to media and politicians, family and friends. Events were held in the following locations:

Ashgrove, QLD
Bathurst, NSW
Bendigo, VIC
Buderim, QLD
Cairns, QLD
Castlemaine, VIC

An infographic also published on the day by 100% Renewable states Australia’s solar capacity has doubled on average every year for the last 5 years.

“We now have a 2,200 megawatt power station on our roofs generating power at the most important time of the day,” it states. “This is equivalent to three medium sized coal fired power plants”.

A 1kW system now costs between a third and a quarter of what it did in 2008 says the group and ordinary Australians are one of the biggest renewable energy investors in the country, with $8 billion of household money invested in solar.

The nation’s love affair with solar power systems has also generated significant employment, with more than 1 in 1000 jobs in Australia associated with solar PV.

100% Renewable is a community initiated campaign working to build community and political support for renewable energy. It is non-partisan and not affiliated with any political party.
