Solar Assisted Catamaran To Guard Great Barrier Reef

A high-tech 24 metre long-range Catamaran Patrol Vessel to work in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA) is under construction

A high-tech 24 metre long-range Catamaran Patrol Vessel to work in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA) is under construction.

Incat Crowther and Marine Engineering Consultants (MEC) have been contracted to build the low environmental impact vessel, which is expected to be launched in 2014.

The craft’s solar panel array will charge lithium-ion batteries that will supply power to appliances throughout the vessel, reducing the use of diesel generators while in operation and at anchor during the night. At times of increased demand, efficient diesel generators will automatically start to either supply the load or charge the battery bank.

The lithium ion batteries offer a number of benefits over lead-acid types; particularly for ocean-going vessels –  the batteries are quarter of the weight and can provide up to ten times the power and ten times the serviceable life.

Other energy efficiency features of the vessel include high R-value insulation, zoned air conditioning plus window blinds and shutters to reduce the impact of the Queensland sun.

Constructed of Marine Grade Aluminium, the vessel’s propulsion will be powered by a pair of Yanmar 6AYM-WGT engines. Capable of speeds up to 25 knots, the vessel is optimized for efficient cruising between 12 and 20 knots.

Able to support up to 15 crew, the vessel offers most creature comforts and even includes a barbecue and outdoor dining area. Between the comfortable appointments of the catamaran and the surrounding vista of the Great Barrier Reef; being a crew member on the vessel might turn out to be one of the best jobs in the world.

Additional specifications of the craft can be viewed here.

The GBRWHA is jointly managed by Queensland’s Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing (DNPRSR) and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).
