Yingli Solar Panels To Help Power 2014 FIFA World Cup Stadium

Yingli Solar has announced the company supplied 1 MW of solar panels to help power Arena Pernambuco, the site of five 2014 FIFA World Cup™ matches.

Yingli Solar has announced the company supplied 1 MW of solar panels to help power Arena Pernambuco, the site of five 2014 FIFA World Cup™ matches.

The ground-mounted system is the first solar farm in the Brazilian State of Pernambuco and will incorporate more than 3,650 Yingli Solar monocrystalline PANDA Series panels.

“Large-scale solar projects like this one are contributing to our mission of reducing the negative and increasing the positive impact of the World Cup on society and the environment,” said FIFA President, Joseph S. Blatter.

The solar array, constructed by Grupo Neoenergia, will generate an estimated 1,500 MWh of electricity annually and will supply thirty percent of Arena Pernambuco’s electricity demand. When the stadium is not in use, electricity generated will be exported to the local community’s electricity grid under Brazil’s net energy metering program.

An associated Visitor’s Center will educate the public about solar energy and provide system performance readings in real-time.

“We hope that by completing high-profile projects like Arena Pernambuco, we can continue driving demand for solar energy across Latin America,” said Robert Petrina, Managing Director of Yingli Green Energy Americas.

Yingli Solar is also an official sponsor of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil. Approximately 715 million people around the world will watch the World Cup final this year; providing Yingli with a major opportunity to raise awareness of its brand and solar generally.

The company has also launched a related competition offering a prize of tickets to the World Cup semi-final and final, travel and accommodation valued at $30,000. Open to Australian home owners and businesses, purchase of a Yingli solar panel based system of at least 2.5kW capacity from an official installation partner such as Energy Matters provides eligibility for entry. Registration for the competition closes 11 May 2014.
