Energy Matters Solar Aid fundraiser

Energy Matters has a solar vision, not just for Australia, but the world! And that vision comes to life through Solar Aid.

Solar power can provide a clean and reliable energy source for people in the developing world. However, they need help to access renewable energy.

2 billion have no access to electricity

Around two billion people have no access to electricity and rely on burning fuels such as kerosene and wood for light and heat. However, these fuels are highly toxic, greenhouse gas intensive and expensive.

For example, a kerosene lamp creates around a tonne of carbon over seven years! A poor family in Africa uses approximately 55 litres of kerosene yearly to light their home and cook food. Respiratory diseases caused by toxic smoke kill 1.6 million women and children each year.

Having solar power improves people’s quality of life – and that’s where Solar Aid comes in.

Solar Aid and its services

Solar Aid trains local people in places such as Africa in how to build small scale solar powered appliances. The organization  provide raw materials and trains people in finance and marketing so they can set up small solar businesses.

Solar Aid also provides solar lanterns and solar cookers to decrease the need for the burning of fossil fuels and wood.

The organization also installs small solar systems for community centres, medical clinics and schools.

Solar Aid is a UK based organization, but has a strong Australian association through performer Cate Blanchett’s involvement as Patron. You can help Solar Aid by giving as little as 1 British pound (around $2 Australian) to go towards financing their incredibly important work. Hence, the Energy Matters Solar Aid Fundraiser!
