India will this week play host to the fourth International Renewable Energy Conference (IREC) in Delhi. The Conference begins on the 27th of October.

Snagging the global clean energy conference is something of a coup for Delhi, still riding high after a successful Commonwealth Games.

But India faces many challenges: a burgeoning middle class in the world’s second-most populated nation has seen it become the third highest carbon polluter on the planet; India produces over five percent of total carbon dioxide emissions.

This was acknowledged by Shri Deepak Gupta, Secretary of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy who said investment in renewable energy solutions would lead to sustainable development – especially for combating poverty and for environmental and climate protection.

The Delhi Conference is the fourth in the series, following events at Washington in 2008, Beijing in 2005 and Bonn in 2004 and is expected to be the premier renewable energy showcase gathering in India ever, with an attendance of over 9,000 delegates, over 250 industry leading speakers, experts, academicians, Government leaders, financial institutions and around 500 exhibitors from all over the world, which will make it the largest event of its kind.

Shri Gupta said the Delhi IREC aims to let the world see India as an investment destination for renewable energy and to provide a platform for technology displays, new applications and innovations. It will also display global research & development with respect to climate change and green environment and demonstrate the strength of the global renewable energy industry by matching up buyers and sellers in the renewable energy sector.
