REC is presenting its latest solar cell technology concept today at Solar Energy UK in Birmingham.

REC says the new solar cells are half the size of those used in regular 60-cell panels.

“This new design reduces internal losses, leading to improved performance in energy yield especially at times of high irradiance,” says part of a statement from the company.

Luc Graré, Senior Vice President Solar Sales and Marketing at REC, says new developments such as the half-cut solar cell will help support large-scale adoption of solar power.

“Advances in technology, such as half-cut cells, are vital steps in bringing the most innovative solar technology to all segments – residential, commercial and industrial as well as large-scale power plants.”

REC is well-known for its innovative designs and processes. Its fluidised bed reactor silicon production process resulted in REC’s award-winning Peak Energy Series solar panels having an energy payback time of just one year. The process uses 80 to 90 percent less energy than traditional methods.

In other recent REC news, the company has launched an initial public offering (IPO) for REC Solar ASA on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

In July the company announced it intended to split its solar panel and polysilicon production into two separate companies – REC Solar and REC Silicon. Forty million shares in REC Solar are being offered; with the IPO ending on October 18.

REC will provide REC Solar with a NOK 300 million (approximately $AUD 53.26M) net cash position, calculated as of June 30, 2013, and will have access to an undrawn credit facility of NOK 200 million (~ AUD $35.5M) from REC.

REC Solar employs around 1,500 people globally is headquartered in Singapore; where its wafer, cell and solar panel production is also located.
