Solar To Help Power Singapore Sports Hub

Thousands of solar panels will generate clean electricity at the new Singapore Sports Hub.

Thousands of solar panels will generate clean electricity at the new Singapore Sports Hub.

Said to be one of the world’s  largest sports-related public-private partnerships, the Sports Hub will have a  55,000-capacity National Stadium featuring a retractable dome roof.

The solar array will offset the energy consumption of the stadium’s bowl cooling system.

Designed and constructed by the Singapore based subsidiary of Phoenix Solar AG, Phoenix Solar Pte Ltd; the 707kW system will consist of over 2,700 REC solar panels and multiple SMA solar inverters.

“This is a great project for Phoenix Solar. Photovoltaic is commercially viable today, and the Sports Hub is a perfect setting to demonstrate integration of photovoltaic in Singapore’s urban landscape,” said Phoenix Solar Pte Ltd’s Managing director, Christophe Inglin.

Philippe Collin Delavaud, Chief Executive Officer of SportsHub Pte Ltd, says the installation is “just the beginning of the Singapore Sports Hub’s plan to integrate innovative technologies into this state-of-the-art sports, entertainment and lifestyle hub.”

According to Wikipedia, the Sports Hub will also boast a  6,000-capacity Aquatics Centre, 3,000-capacity Sports Arenas and 41,000 square metres of commercial space for leisure, shopping and dining activities. Completion of the development of the 35 ha site in Kallang is expected in April 2014.

The REC/SMA combination is becoming a popular one in commercial scale solar power systems. Closer to home, Australian company Energy Matters has completed a number of commercial projects using REC/SMA components.

The use of solar for sporting establishments and stadiums is also becoming increasingly commonplace. In the past we’ve published stories on projects including Energy Matters’ Bankstown Basketball Stadium installation; Queensland’s Carrara (Metricon) Stadium, Townsville RSL Stadium, Pituaçu Stadium in Salvador da Bahia, and the main stadium used for the World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung.
