Thinking about energy independence and reducing the stranglehold electricity companies have over you? If you are, then Energy Matters can help you achieve this goal with home battery systems and energy storage. That is solar energy battery power. You can get your FREE solar battery quotes now.

Solar batteries are about taking control of your power generation and consumption. Thousands of Australians have realised they can get more out of their panels than just feeding excess energy back into the grid for a small feed-in tariff. Solar batteries allow solar power generated during the day to be stored for use at night or on cloudy days when solar panels cannot generate electricity. Adding a battery to a residential solar system can double the amount of self-generated electricity consumption!

Energy Matters has been a leader in the renewable energy industry since 2005. We can connect you with our trusted local installers, who will provide up to 3 FREE quotes for your home solar energy system. You can also learn more about home solar panel system sizing here.

What are solar battery systems?

Home solar battery systems, also known as battery storage systems or solar battery solutions, are becoming increasingly popular for homeowners looking to maximise their investment in solar energy. These systems essentially function as a giant rechargeable battery, capturing your panels’ excess solar energy during the day and storing it for later use. This provides several benefits, including:

  • Increased self-consumption: By storing excess solar power, you can rely less on the grid and use more of the clean energy you generate, reducing dependence on traditional electricity sources and lowering your electricity bills.
  • Backup power: In a power outage, a home solar battery system with sufficient capacity can provide backup power, keeping essential appliances running and your home illuminated.
  • Grid Resilience: Battery storage systems in Australia are seen as a way to bolster grid stability. By participating in virtual power plants (VPPs), homeowners can return stored solar energy to the grid during peak demand periods, potentially earning incentives.

Origin and Energy Matters have teamed up to provide customers with an additional way to save and make money!

Join Origin Loop VPP as an Origin electricity customer and earn a $400 bonus! Earn $1/kWh during peak demand by letting them draw on your battery-stored solar energy.

You’ll also enjoy a 13 c/kWh feed-in tariff^ and enjoy full transparency through the Origin app. No lock-ins, leave anytime, and your yearly energy export is capped at 200kWh. Win-win for you and the grid!

How do solar battery systems work?

Solar battery systems act as a backup and optimiser for your solar power. During the day, your solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity can be directly used by your home appliances after being converted to AC by your inverter. But any excess energy, instead of returning to the grid, gets stored in the battery system. The battery uses electrochemical reactions to store this excess energy.  When sunlight is limited, such as at night or on cloudy days, the stored energy in the battery is converted back to usable AC electricity to power your home. This allows you to maximise your solar energy use and reduce reliance on the grid.

Do solar systems require batteries?

No, solar panel systems don’t necessarily require batteries. They can function independently, generating clean electricity during the day and relying on the grid for power at night. However, adding a solar battery system offers several advantages. It increases energy independence, allowing you to use self-generated solar power during outages or off-peak hours. Battery storage systems can also help you save money by taking advantage of time-of-use electricity rates, where energy costs less during off-peak hours.

How much solar battery storage do I need?

The amount of battery storage you need depends on your specific energy consumption and solar panel generation capacity. Factors like household size, daily electricity usage, and desired level of energy independence all play a role.  For instance, if you want to power your home entirely through solar energy during outages, you’ll need a larger battery storage system than someone just looking to offset daytime grid reliance.  Consulting with a solar professional can help you determine your optimal battery storage capacity needs.

How to install a solar battery system

Installing a solar battery system typically involves working with a licensed solar installer.  The process generally involves a site assessment to determine compatibility with your existing solar setup and electrical system.  The installer will then recommend a suitable battery storage system and handle the installation process, which includes securely mounting the batteries, connecting them to your solar panels and inverter, and configuring the system for optimal performance.
