Launching soon, the WA Residential Battery Scheme offers rebates and interest-free loans to help households install batteries, cut power bills, and boost energy resilience—backed by state and federal support.
WA Residential Battery Scheme

Updated 10.06.2025

Western Australians are set to benefit from the upcoming WA Residential Battery Scheme, designed to make home battery systems more accessible and affordable. This initiative offers one-off rebates and interest-free loans to help households purchase residential batteries.

Key features of the scheme

  • Launch date: The scheme is scheduled to commence on or before 1 July 2025.
  • Availability: 20,000 rebates and no-interest loans will be offered and rolled out in several rounds.
  • Rebate amount: Up to $1,300 for Synergy customers ($130 per kWh of battery capacity) and up to $3,800 for Horizon Power customers ($380 per kWh of battery capacity).
  • Eligibility: Details on eligibility and participation will be provided closer to the launch date.
  • Approved suppliers and equipment: A list of approved battery suppliers, installers, and equipment is yet to be confirmed. Batteries installed before the scheme’s commencement will not be eligible for a rebate or loan funding.

How to prepare

While applications are not yet open, interested households can:

  • Stay informed: Monitor the Energy Policy WA website for updates on the scheme’s rollout, eligibility criteria, and approved suppliers.
  • Assess energy needs: Consider your household’s energy consumption patterns to determine the appropriate battery size and capacity.
  • Consult professionals: Engage with energy consultants or accredited installers to understand the benefits of battery storage and how it integrates with existing solar PV systems.

Federal support: Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Complementing the WA initiative, the Australian Government will launch the Cheaper Home Batteries Program on 1 July 2025. This $2.3 billion subsidy aims to reduce the cost of home battery systems by at least 30%, with larger rebates for higher-capacity systems up to 50kWh. WA residents can combine the federal and state rebate for a maximum rebate of up to $5,000 for Synergy customers and $7,500 for Horizon Power customers.

Benefits include:

  • Cost savings: Households could save up to $2,300 annually on power bills.
  • Grid resilience: Enhanced storage capabilities support grid stability and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Environmental impact: Increased battery adoption contributes to emission reductions and supports Australia’s renewable energy targets.
