Does It Matter Where Your Solar Panels Come From? Adelaide’s Betting Yes

Adelaide’s push for Aussie-made solar highlights a shift: energy security, climate-fit design, and local support now matter as much as efficiency and cost.

For many going solar, the top priorities are price, efficiency, and payback period. The origin of panels, whether they’re made locally or shipped from overseas, rarely gets much attention. 

With Australia’s only solar panel manufacturer ramping up production and government funding pushing for a stronger domestic supply chain, that might be about to change 

The question now isn’t just what kind of solar system you want, but where it should come from, and what that means for your home. 

Most of our solar is still imported

Australia leads the world in rooftop solar adoption. Over 3.7 million systems have been installed nationwide, contributing more than 20% of the country’s electricity supply, according to the Clean Energy Regulator. But more than 90% of the panels on those roofs are imported, mostly from China. 

That dependence has clear implications. Overseas supply chains are vulnerable to disruptions, such as trade tensions, shipping delays, and fluctuating global prices. During the pandemic, many households experienced long wait times and price hikes due to import shortages of panels and inverters. 

What’s changing now?

Adelaide-based Tindo Solar is currently the only company manufacturing solar panels on Australian soil. With support from the federal government’s Solar Sunshot program, it’s scaling up operations significantly, boosting its annual production and planning for long-term expansion. The goal is simple: to give households more access to locally built, climate-appropriate solar products. 

At the same time, public investment is being directed beyond just panel assembly. Major funding is supporting feasibility studies into producing raw materials needed to manufacture solar components domestically. 

One project is examining a large-scale, low-emissions polysilicon facility in Queensland (QLD). Another is investigating a similar material hub in New South Wales (NSW). A third is focused on producing ingots and wafers, two of the most crucial inputs in solar panel production, that are almost entirely imported today. 

If these initiatives succeed, they could lay the groundwork for a full end-to-end supply chain based locally. For homeowners, that means fewer overseas dependencies, more pricing stability, and panels designed specifically for our conditions. 

Built for Australian conditions

Not all solar panels are created equal, especially in heat. Most imported panels are made for general global use. However, our climate is harsh with high UV levels, extreme summer temperatures, coastal corrosion and fire zone requirements. These all affect panel performance. 

A study by the Australian PV Institute (APVI) found that efficiency can drop by up to 0.5% for every degree above 25℃. That might sound small, but over 25 years, it adds up to thousands of kilowatt hours of lost energy. 

Panels made locally, like those from Tindo, are designed with Australian conditions in mind. Thicker glass, tougher frames, and better thermal performance help protect both out and longevity. For homes in the tropics, along the coast, or near bushland, these small differences can be major advantages. 

Faster service and clearer support

When something goes wrong with your solar panels, dealing with offshore manufacturers can be frustrating. Communication delays, complex warranty claims, and difficulty sourcing replacement parts can drag the process out for weeks, or longer. 

Buying from a local manufacturer gives you a direct line to support. Warranties are handled domestically, spare parts are easier to access, and technicians understand the product inside and out. That means less downtime, less stress, and a better long-term experience. 

This matters because while most panels come with 25-year performance guarantees, they don’t mean much if the manufacturer isn’t responsive when you need them. 

Energy security starts at home

The transition to clean energy is more than the uptake, but it relies on resilience. A locally built solar industry reduces exposure to geopolitical tensions, shipping constraints, and global supply shocks. 

Homeowners may not feel that directly on day one, but over the lifespan of a solar system, it matters. A local supply chain can help smooth prices, reduce wait times, and allow faster innovation. It also supports local jobs and the development of solar products better suited to households. 

For households, that means more control over sourcing, stronger energy security, and less reliance on unpredictable global markets.

What about cost?

At present, Australian-made panels still tend to be more expensive per watt than high-volume imports. But the cost difference is narrowing, and the total value picture is more nuanced. 

Locally made panels offer dual benefits: they serve your home and strengthen Australia’s clean energy capabilities. With better climate-fit design, clearer support, and more transparent supply chains, they’re increasingly worth considering, especially for homeowners who prioritise long-term performance. 

Should you wait?

If you’re planning to install solar within the next year, there’s no need to hold off. Quality systems are still widely available. However, it’s worth asking your installer whether locally made options are offered and how they stack up for your property. 

As production grows and new supply chains are shaped, homeowners will have more choices than ever before. Not just in panel type, but in how those panels are sourced, supported and designed to last. 

Solar is no longer just about what sits on your roof. It’s also about where it comes from, how it performs over time, and whether it’s built for your conditions, not someone else’s.
