A 3.2MW ground-mount PV based solar farm inverter manufacturer SMA will use to test new system solutions has been put into operation in the Sandershäuser Berg industrial park in Niestetal, near Kassel, Germany.

Constructed in just three months, power generated at the facility will be consumed by SMA Solar Factory 3 as well as in other of the company’s buildings.

As well as testing SMA solar inverters, combiners, battery storage and medium-voltage components for large-scale solar farms, SMA will also use plant to gain experience in working with new 1,500 Volt-DC technology and the PV park control function.

“By using it, we can test our new system solutions under real conditions, in close proximity to developers and demonstrate them to our customers as if in the field. This saves us time and money,” said Jürgen Reinert, Managing Board Member for Technical Development.

“We are currently testing the SMA Utility Power System with a Sunny Central inverter, a medium-voltage block and DC technology there, which we already presented to the public at Intersolar in Munich June 2014.”

Founded in 1981, SMA has more than 5,000 employees and sales and service subsidiaries in 21 countries. SMA is the world’s largest solar inverter manufacturer and its products have been a popular choice in Australian home and commercial solar power installations.

The company has won multiple awards for its contributions to solar technology. This year it was recognized with the Intersolar AWARD in the Photovoltaics category for the SMA Fuel Save Controller; which allows for the integration of higher shares of photovoltaics into diesel-powered systems and ensures the stable operation of photovoltaic diesel hybrid systems while reducing operating and maintenance costs.

In 2013, it won another Intersolar Award for the Sunny Boy Smart Energy inverter with integrated storage and the Smart Energy Award 2013 for its Smart Home comprehensive energy management solution.
