Earlier today, the City of Melbourne announced 2011’s prestigious Melbourne Awards nominations were now open. As with last year’s event; the 2011 Awards offer a special category for contributions to sustainability.

“The Melbourne Awards celebrate the work of those whose passion and commitment has helped shape Melbourne as one of the world’s most liveable cities.” said Lord Mayor Robert Doyle at an event earlier today.

Categories relating to significant contributions to city’s profile, community and sustainability feature in the Melbourne Awards, each with three divisions – individual, corporation and community.

The Contribution to Sustainability category recognises projects or activities that focus on a more environmentally friendly city through progress in sustainable innovation and design; or the creation of new environmental projects or programs.

Last year’s winner in the Individual Division was Ian Penrose; founder of Yarra Riverkeepers Association, a group that advocates for the health of Melbourne’s major waterway. Winner of the Community Organisation Division was Conservation Volunteers Australia; which creates and implements conservation programs to facilitate the community in connecting with their environment through natural restoration projects and other activities.

Winner of the Corporation Division in 2010 was solar power solutions provider, Energy Matters. The company was founded nearly 6 years ago in suburban Armadale and has since grown into one of Australia’s largest companies dedicated to the supply and installation of renewable energy products; with a special focus on commercial and home solar power.

Nominations for the 2011 Melbourne Awards are open until Monday 2 May – further information can be viewed on the City of Melbourne web site. A gala awards ceremony announcing the winners will be held at Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday 27 August, 2011.
