Rally Against Origin Energy’s ‘Strangling Of Renewable Energy’

The release of a report claiming to demonstrate how Origin Energy is blocking renewable energy will coincide with a rally outside Origin Energy’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday.

The release of a report claiming to demonstrate how Origin Energy is blocking renewable energy will coincide with a rally outside Origin Energy’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday.

Rally organisers 100% Renewable say while it expects Origin will be touting its long term strategy for investing in fossil fuels at the AGM, what it won’t mention is its actions against something it perceives to be a threat to its profits – renewable energy.

“Origin has been very vocal in its campaign to cut the renewable energy target, and has been actively been hindering the renewable revolution by not investing in renewable energy and blocking other developer’s projects,” says Lindsay Soutar, National Director of 100% Renewable.

The report to be released on Wednesday has been produced by 100% Renewable and Greenpeace Australia Pacific.

The rally will be held 9:30 AM on Wednesday 23 October outside of City Recital Hall, Angel Place, Sydney CBD.

In August, Origin Energy proposed that the large scale renewable energy target (LRET) should be expanded with higher targets; but also to push out the 20% by 2020 timetable.

Last week, The Australian Solar Council’s John Grimes warned capitulation on the target by the industry “is not a strategy, rather it is a pretty useful outcome if you sit on the side of the incumbent polluters.”

100% Renewable is a community campaign for clean energy and has been the force behind initiatives such as Solar Scorecard; which rates how local politicians stand on issues relating to renewable energy.

The group also leads Solar Citizens; a project bringing together existing and potential owners of solar power systems with the goal of protecting the rights of solar owners and ensuring Australia’s rooftop solar revolution continues. The project is independent of any political organisation or party.

UPDATE: The report mentioned above has now been released.
