SolarEdge Optimizers Used In 2.5MW Solar Farm

More than 12,000 SolarEdge Optimizers are now in operation at the Challenger PV facility near Versailles, France.

More than 12,000 SolarEdge Optimizers are now in operation at the Challenger PV facility near Versailles, France.

Constructed by Bouygues Construction, the installation covers 25,000 m2 and consists of ground-mounted and roof-mounted sections.

The facility also uses 202 SolarEdge inverters and features six SolarEdge fire-fighter gateways, designed to allow fire-fighters to stop electricity production and decrease the system voltage to safe DC levels. This is achieved either manually through an emergency stop button or automatically through a Fire Alarm Control Panel System.

SolarEdge inverters and power optimizers were selected for the project as the technology provides 20% increase in energy yield.

The SolarEdge Power Optimizer is a small box of electronics attached on or near to a panel that keeps the module at maximum power point (MPP) and prevents electricity losses due to module, soiling or age mismatch or partial shading conditions. Each panel’s performance can be monitored and is represented on a virtual map of a complete system.

Bouygues Construction says use of the optimizers simplifies maintenance by allowing a faulty PV module to be easily pinpointed. The SolarEdge system can be configured to send automatic alerts when system issues are identified.

SolarEdge’s VP of Marketing & Product Strategy,  Lior Handelsman, states the company’s technology is becoming a standard feature in commercial solar power systems.

“Being selected by Bouygues Construction, a leader in its field, demonstrates the growing trend to use module-level optimization in large PV systems in order to protect these significant investments.”

By the end of last year, SolarEdge had shipped over 3,000,000 power optimizers and 100,000 inverters to more than 50 countries. The company estimates it will have shipped over 5,000,000 optimizers by the close of 2014. SolarEdge established the DC power optimizer segment and leads it with a market share of over 70%.
