Solar Power Systems Safe

After recent media coverage of potential risk of electrical fires from poorly installed solar power systems, Energy Matters today assured customers and the public that its solar panels and installation procedures were completely safe and met or exceeded Australian standards.

Melbourne, Victoria, February 19, 2010. Energy Matters today assured customers and the public that its solar panels and installation procedures were completely safe and met or exceeded Australian standards.

Recent media coverage of potential risk of electrical fires from poorly installed solar power systems was of deep concern.

Max Sylvester, co-founder of national solar solutions provider Energy Matters, said “As solar power becomes more popular and affordable for Australians it is important that efficiency and safety are not compromised.”

“It is a serious matter. Product quality and appropriate training are the two key factors in ensure installation is safe and delivers energy efficiency for households.”

“All solar panels installed by Energy Matters meet and exceed Australian and European standards but it is also important that the balance of system components such as wiring, inverters and circuit breakers are of good standard and installed properly by qualified and experienced installers. That’s where fire risks can occur.”

“All tradespeople installing our systems under the Federal Government’s Solar Credits program must have appropriate accreditation. Energy Matters uses its own network of experienced tradespeople.”

“In addition to the auditing carried out by the Clean Energy Council, we have our own internal auditing process to ensure that our solar installations meet safety and performance standards.” said Mr Sylvester.

Energy Matters holds BCSE accreditations, Clean Energy Council membership at the network level and electrical contracting licenses in several Australian states.

According to the Clean Energy Council there have been around 100,000 solar panels installed in Australian households over the last 30 years with no reports of the system causing house fires.

“As the number of installers and providers increase in Australia it’s important that safety standards are not compromised and we welcome the calls by the CEC to review audit, accreditation and training standards and component product quality.”

“We also acknowledge the concern of the Fire fighters union and we would actively participate in providing information and training about solar panels to better inform their members.”
