When thinking of movers and shakers in the world electric cars, brands such as Tesla tend spring to mind. A company you may not have heard about also intends to be a major player.
Last week, Faraday Future commenced works on a massive manufacturing facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada.
Faraday Future plans to produce electric vehicles providing seamless connectivity to the outside world. It says it will also investigate other facets of automotive and related technology industries, including new ownership models, in-vehicle content and autonomous driving.
“Our $1 billion factory investment goes beyond assembly lines – this facility will be the formative breeding ground for our vision for future mobility,” says a statement from the company.
The company’s nearly 500 employees in California will see many new faces join the company with the completion of the facility – it’s expected to employ 4,500 people.
To make its high-tech vehicles, Faraday Future will be powering its manufacturing facility with clean energy.
“We will be utilizing solar, wind, and geo-thermal energy to power this environmentally conscious endeavor. High-quality, sustainably sourced parts, shipped to this facility from Tier-1 suppliers all over the world, will be coalesced and crafted into our upcoming line of production vehicles.”
Faraday Future aims to complete construction two years, about half the time a facility of this magnitude would usually take to build.
Earlier this year, the company unveiled a concept car at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas; the FFZERO1 Concept. The vehicle, reminiscent of the Batmobile, has more bells and buzzers than you can poke a stick (or swipe a finger) at.
“..the FFZERO1 Concept vehicle is a test bed and a parallel study from which our design and engineering teams continue to draw inspiration and solutions for our future range of clean, intuitive electric vehicles,” says the company.
The projected specifications of the FFZERO1 vehicle include 4 quad core motors boasting 1,000 horsepower and a top speed exceeding 320 kilometres per hour. It will be able to go from 0 – 100 km/hr in less than 3 seconds.
Faraday Future expects to launch its first commercial vehicle in 2017; the specifications and styling of which appear to still be a closely guarded secret.
