NT Emissions vs Other States
Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions was 535 million tonnes CO2-e in 2017. With 16 million of that total, NT is well and truly at the lower end of Australia’s polluters.
With renewable energy sitting at approximately 12% of NT’s total electricity sources, NT
sits squarely at the bottom of the ranking of Australia’s renewable energy production, following
QLD’s second lowest ranking at 16.6%. Compared to SA’s 59.7% and TAS’s 99.2%, NT has a long way to go, but renewable installations, both large-scale and small-scale, are increasing year on year.

NT Total Net Emissions
State and Territory Greenhouse Gas Inventories 2018 report found that NT produced a total of 16.0 Mt CO2-e. Electricity production and usage accounted for 31% of these emissions.
NT’s total emissions are rising every year due to the expansion of mining and exports. NT’s energy is primarily sourced from gas, diesel, and solar. Renewables account for only 12% (approx.) of energy sourced.
The current Territory Government has a policy of achieving 50% renewables for electricity supply by 2030.
