Energy Matters: Our story and industry leadership legacy of quality and trust
Energy Matters has long been a trusted Australian company dedicated to providing services, resources, and news across residential, business, and wholesale renewable energy sectors.
Founded in 2005, the company quickly became one of Australia’s most recognisable clean-energy brands. As a former solar retailer, Energy Matters installed more than 40,000 solar systems on homes, schools and commercial sites, including a landmark 400kW rooftop system in Melbourne—once the country’s largest privately funded solar project.
As a founding member of the Clean Energy Council’s Approved Retailer program, Energy Matters has established a reputation for excellence that consumers and installers continue to respect. Today, Energy Matters provides other services for connecting Australians with trusted local installers and manufacturers through:
- 3 high-quality solar quotes,
- Energy comparison tools,
- Marketplace,
- and comprehensive renewable energy resources.
Where Energy Matters is today
With over 300 partners across Australia in solar retail and installation, Energy Matters has become a household name since 2005. Recognised as a trusted source of news, blogs, and resources, our solar expertise also extends to television programs such as Energy Matters TV Show and digital platforms.
As industry experts in solar energy, we have helped thousands of Australians make more informed decisions about:
- solar panel system,
- solar battery storage,
- wind power,
- hydro,
- electric vehicles (EVs),
- off-grid systems,
- emerging green technologies, and more.
Energy Matters is no longer a solar retailer
For absolute clarity, Energy Matters ceased operation as a solar retailer in 2019. Flex (the previous owner of Energy Matters) closed its wholesale and retail residential solar operations in Australia. Energy Matters, in its current form, is not affiliated with Flextronics or any pre-2020 operations.
Our current focus is on becoming the leading independent resource hub, connection, and electrification advisory for Australian renewable energy consumers.
Energy Matters’ mission and solar philosophy
Energy Matters’ mission is to provide a one-stop shop resource for consumers, industry professionals, manufacturers, and environmental advocates, working together to achieve net zero.
We are:
- Your independent renewable energy advisor
- A trusted connector to Australia’s top solar retailers and installers

How to become a solar installer (by State)
Breaking into solar installer careers varies by state, depending on licensing and training requirements. Below is a state-by-state guide to help you on your path.
Victoria (VIC)
- In Victoria, Solar Victoria offers an “Upskilling for Electricians” program that provides free training for A-grade electricians and fourth-year apprentices to become solar PV and battery system installers.
- After training, you can apply for Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation to become a licensed installer/designer.
- There’s a mandatory safety course: “Work safely on roofs with renewable energy systems” (VU23631) for non-electrical installation roles.
- Some of these TAFE short courses are subsidised or free under Victorian government programs.

New South Wales (NSW)
- TAFE NSW offers a Statement of Attainment in Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems (Design & Install) (course code 901-00107) for licensed electricians in New South Wales (NSW).
- Completing this course helps you apply for SAA accreditation, enabling you to work in solar PV installation and design.

Queensland (QLD)
- Training providers in Queensland, such as Solar Training Centre, run a 5-day course (face-to-face and online) on grid-connected solar PV design and installation.
- Licensed electricians who complete this can then apply for SAA accreditation.
- Their “Install Only” course focuses solely on installation (no design) for hands-on roles.

Other states / Territories
- For more specialised work, such as Stand-Alone Power Systems (SAPS), licensed electricians can take a design-and-install course through Staysafe Industry Training.
- Across all states, Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) provides accreditation pathways for grid-connected PV, battery systems, SAPS, and more.

Pathways into sustainability & renewable energy careers
If you’re interested not only in solar installation jobs but in broader renewable energy careers, here are pathways and courses to consider:
- Electrician apprenticeship
- A time-tested route: start as an electrical apprentice, pick up on-the-job experience, and later specialise in PV.
- Many solar installers got their foot in the door via electrical apprenticeships while doing short solar training courses
- TAFE and Vocational Education
- Skill sets like UEESS00194 – Designer/Installer Grid-Connected PV are available at TAFEs (e.g., Holmesglen, SWTAFE), and require an unrestricted electrical licence.
- These programs include safe work practices, system design, and on-roof installation skills.
- Short courses & CPD
- Solar Training Centre’s 5-day design + install course covers the national units (e.g., UEERE0054, UEERE0081) required for SAA accreditation.
- Their “Work Safely in the Solar Industry” course covers rooftop safety and is mandatory for many installation roles.
- Stand-Alone Power Systems (Off-grid)
- For off-grid or remote work, take the SAPS Design & Install course via Staysafe Industry Training.
- This also aligns with SAA’s accreditation paths for SAPS professionals.
- Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
- SAA accreditation requires ongoing education. Many course providers offer training units that count toward SAA’s CPD points.
- Maintaining your SAA accreditation ensures you stay current and competitive in solar installer careers.

Step-by-step guide to solar installer training and accreditation
The pathway to securing a solar installer job involves a structured training process delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).
- Obtain an unrestricted electrical licence: First, you must complete an electrical apprenticeship and be awarded an unrestricted electrical licence in your state. This prerequisite is non-negotiable for hands-on solar installation jobs.
- Complete SAA-recognised units of competency: Licensed electricians must undertake specific solar PV units. These commonly include:
- UEERE0061: Design grid-connected photovoltaic power supply systems.
- UEERE0080: Install photovoltaic power conversion equipment to the grid.
- UEERE0081: Install photovoltaic systems to power conversion equipment.
- Gain additional specialised accreditation: To future-proof your solar installation career, consider further training in battery storage systems. The SAA offers accreditation for Grid Connected Battery Systems (GCBS), a growing requirement for participation in state-based battery schemes.
- Secure essential documentation: Before applying for SAA accreditation, ensure you have:
- Proof of your current electrical licence.
- Working Safely at Heights certification
- Public Liability Insurance certificate of currency.
