Based on its 2009 carbon footprint, Bupa aimed to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2020. Key to achieving this goal was the deployment of onsite renewables and staff engagement.
Energy Matters first developed a business case to support Bupa in achieving its solar goals. Then a six-month program was launched to install Phases 1 to 3 of what would become Australia’s largest distributed commercial solar project, followed by Phases 4, 5 and 6, which added additional capacity.
Using REC 260W, Yingli 250W and Daqo 250W solar panels, along with Fronius and ABB inverters plus SunLock mounting systems across all arrays, Energy Matters once again demonstrated its industry-leading Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) capabilities.
The 53 systems placed represent 4.5 MW+ of solar capacity that was expected to generate approximately 5,500 megawatt hours of clean electricity in the first full year of operation. The solar arrays avoided thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions annually and saved Bupa Aged Care millions in electricity costs over the life of the project.
Recognition for excellence in sustainability
In August 2015, Bupa’s solar initiative was honoured at the Australian Business Awards, where the company won the ABA100 Award for Sustainability. This national recognition reflected both the project’s technical excellence and Bupa’s long-term dedication to environmental stewardship.
Mathew Heggie, former Chief Engineer at Bupa Aged Care Services, praised the collaboration:
“This is the most successful portfolio deployment in Bupa’s history. We cannot fault the management and execution of this project.”
This recognition placed Bupa and Energy Matters among the pioneers driving sustainable commercial energy solutions in Australia.

BUPA Aged Care took the lead with strong environmental aims and recognised the value of solar in achieving these. Beyond the benefits of energy savings across Australia’s largest solar PV portfolio, the company reaped the rewards of their commitment to environmental stewardship in terms of economic returns and hedging against the rising cost of power.
