For nearly four decades, dedicated wildlife foster carers Colin and Jill have devoted their lives to rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned joeys and wombats. Their work is a 24/7 commitment, caring for vulnerable animals that need constant warmth, food, and medical support. But with rising energy costs, the future of their foster care was at risk — until GoodWe Australia, Six Star Plus, and AWM Greentech Clayton stepped in.

In a heartwarming collaboration, GoodWe and Six Star Plus partnered to install a solar energy system at Colin and Jill’s property, ensuring they now have a reliable and sustainable power source to support their life-saving work.

A solar solution to ease the energy burden

When GoodWe Australia learned about Colin and Jill’s struggle with soaring electricity bills, they immediately reached out to local solar retailer Six Star Plus. Recognising the couple’s urgent need for a sustainable energy solution, the two companies worked together to design a system tailored to the unique needs of a wildlife rescue.

The result? An 8.4kW solar system featuring 20 REC solar panels, generously donated by AWM Greentech Clayton, and a powerful GoodWe 8kW MS G3 inverter. This system slashes energy costs while providing stable, renewable power for essential equipment like heating lamps, refrigerators, and medical devices — all crucial for the care and rehabilitation of orphaned animals.

A shared commitment to making a difference

Dean Williamson, Country Manager at GoodWe Australia, emphasised the company’s passion for supporting causes that make a real impact:

“Helping worthy and non-profit causes is something we’re really passionate about at GoodWe. When we heard about Colin and Jill’s situation, we saw an incredible opportunity to make a real difference. Wildlife carers do vital work, often behind the scenes and usually receive no government funding, and having access to solar energy will ease their financial strain while supporting conservation efforts.”

Lauren Ciconte from Six Star Plus echoed this sentiment, praising Colin and Jill’s unwavering dedication:

“Colin and Jill have committed decades of their lives, caring for these animals around the clock. We wanted to support them in a way that has a lasting impact. The Six Star Plus team do a lot of voluntary work around Victoria every year, along with fundraising projects and donated systems. Last year we were proud to be given the GoodWe ‘GoodWill’ Award, so we were delighted to work with GoodWe on this project. AWM Greentech Clayton were also fantastic supporters in donating the solar panels needed. We hope Colin and Jill can now continue their incredible work, without the stress of high energy bills.”

More than just solar — it’s about saving wildlife

For Colin and Jill, the new solar system is a game-changer. The reduced energy costs mean more resources can be directed towards the animals — from purchasing formula for joeys to stocking up on essential items like tissues and wet wipes.

“We care for these animals 24/7, and our energy use is huge. The solar system is a game-changer—it means lower costs and more resources for the joeys,” said Colin. “We also rely on things like formula, tissues, and wet wipes, so any support is always appreciated. Our goal is to raise these young ones, move them to a larger shelter as they grow, and eventually see them released back into the wild.”

This initiative showcases how renewable energy isn’t just about cutting carbon emissions — it’s about supporting local communities and protecting Australia’s unique wildlife. GoodWe, Six Star Plus, and AWM Greentech Clayton have proven that solar power can do more than reduce bills — it can help save lives.
