The Beast D : Off-Road Solar-Charged Scooter

The Beast D - Off-road eBike

Meet The Beast D – an eBike with some of the features of an ATV, plus inbuilt solar panels for charging (albeit slowly).

The two-wheel drive bike boasts 2 x 500W brushless DC motors and 60V 20AH lithium-ion energy storage good for 800 cycles.  The cells used in the battery pack are Samsung 2200mAH 18650’s (18 mm in diameter x 65 mm in length) – the same form factor used in Tesla vehicles.

The scooter/ebike can be charged via mains electricity; which takes 4 – 6 hours, or through the 15W solar panel that continuously trickle charges the battery pack.

Daymak claims the fully enclosed  removable solar battery pack will provide 10km of travel per 8 hours of ambient light charging. The removable battery also doubles as a stand-alone backup power pack and features 2 USB plugs.

A fully charged battery will provide a range of up to 30 km depending on speed and terrain. The Beast D has a top speed of 50 km/h and is capable of inclines of up to 36 degrees.

And if the battery should go flat while out and about? Use the pedals. However, at 118kg it’s no featherweight. The pedals are really there for other reasons – to classify it as a bike and the rider can also work with the motor by pedaling; increasing the range.

The price for the Beast-D is USD $4,299; which  is around a billion Australian dollars these days (actually, a tad over AUD $6,000 at current exchange rates) – plus shipping.

Daymak also produces U.S. street legal versions of The Beast – the Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate. In some parts of the USA, these versions can be ridden on public roads without the need for a license or registration.

In most states of Australia, eBike motors are limited to a power output of  200 watts or 250 watts if the motor is activated by a pedal assist system. In all cases, eBikes while powered by a motor are restricted to a top speed of 25km/h. Anything above this is considered a motorbike; requiring a license, registration and insurance.

All the “street” Beast models have a 500 watt motor, except for the EU version of the Standard, which is 250W.
