Virginia reports on REC’s 5 millionth solar panel, Victoria’s Yarra Climate Action Now pursuing a community-owned solar farm and solar soon to be an even better deal for small businesses in Australia.

– REC has celebrated production of the 5 millionth Peak Energy Series solar panel at the 13th SolarExpo held in Italy. In addition to this news REC has also been awarded the Top Brand PV seal by EuPD Research and has been recognised as the leading European supplier of solar modules by IMS Research. This recognition builds on previous accolades earned by the company, including winning the Solar Industry Award for Module Innovation. – Victoria’s Yarra Climate Action Now is finalising a pre-feasibility study for a medium scale community owned rooftop solar farm in inner Melbourne. The group will be holding a forum concerning the solar project on Saturday May 19th in Clifton Hill, with special guest speaker, MP Adam Bandt. Under the proposal, funds to buy and install the solar panels will be provided by the community. An agreement will be formed with the owner of a large rooftop area to host the system. The owner will purchase the electricity generated by the system and the community investors will receive an annual return. Read more.
 
– From the beginning of July, Australian small businesses will be able to write off assets to the value of $6,500 – including solar power systems. The tax reforms apply to businesses with a turnover of less than $2 million a year. The tax break will make an even stronger case for businesses to slash their electricity bills by going solar. Installing solar power can generate huge electricity bill savings for businesses – for example a 3.185kW system in Sydney can generate savings of up to $1,000 a year. Read more.
