New Adelaide City Council rebates for shared solar arrays, electric vehicle chargers and energy storage

South Australian virtual power plant soon to enter phase 3.

New Adelaide City Council rebates  have been announced for shared solar, electric vehicle chargers and energy storage on multi-storey buildings.

From July 1, rebates for shared solar PV will be available to apartments and commercial buildings in the City area.

The rebate provides up to $20,000 per site with a maximum of $500 per premises, not exceeding 20 per cent of installation costs. Solar power systems must also exceed 20 kW capacity to be eligible.

Solar apartments a priority for Adelaide City Council

Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the rebates would encourage the uptake of solar energy in city apartments.

“Shared solar can bring benefits and bill savings for owners, tenants and residents of multi-storey developments,” she said.

“It is an area of technology and energy market innovation [in which] we would like accelerated progress.”

Adelaide City Council rebates good news for renters

Most households will not qualify for the new rebates. But it’s good news for renters and those on low incomes.

The scheme provides private landlords and concession card holders with up to $5,000 (depending on capacity) for residential solar PV.

Households and commercial properties can also apply for up to $1,000 for the upgrade or installation of solar hot water.

The changes are part of Adelaide’s Sustainability Incentives Scheme (SIS).

Adelaide City Council rebates for two-way EV charging

Adelaide led the national EV race by installing free chargers across the City back in 2016.

Another incentive will encourage city-wide electric vehicle use by offering up to $5,000 for installing two-way EV charging stations.

These units let EV batteries then link into the electricity grid and form virtual power plants. Owners can then charge up when prices are low and sell when prices rise.

The Mayor said by 2030, city car park operators could be partnering with fleets of workers who could be ‘paid to park’.

“Or visitors might ‘plug and play’ while they are at a City festival, because they can sell energy in their vehicle battery back to the national electricity market,” she added.

Energy storage and efficiency rebates for businesses

The scheme offers a subsidy of up to $6,000 on the cost of a battery as well as low interest finance if needed.
