NT Announces “Bigger, Better” Home Improvement Scheme

Solar incentives - Darwin and NT

Home owners in Darwin and throughout the Northern Territory thinking about going solar now have an added incentive – the re-launched Home Improvement Scheme.

The previous scheme offered vouchers of up to $2,000 to go towards home improvements, such as the purchase of solar power systems and battery storage.

The new scheme offers double that – $4,000. Furthermore, Territorians who have already received a $2000 voucher can access the scheme again; up to a total value of $2,000.

“This bigger and better scheme is targeted and will deliver real results because we are opening it up to people who have already accessed it, doubling the value for people who haven’t used it yet, increasing the overall budget and extending the time it can be accessed – these are big improvements,” stated Michael Gunner, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory.

Around $60 million is expected to be generated for small business through the revamped Home Improvement Scheme. The previous scheme was a huge success, generating millions in new work within the first few weeks of launch.

“We know the Territory economy is going through a tough period – which wasn’t helped by a lack of planning and chaos over the past four years – so we have listened and acted to support business,” said Mr. Gunner.

Businesses have been able to register to participate in the program since yesterday and homeowners applications commence from 20th February. The Government is expecting the new program to be very popular, so home owners are encouraged to register as soon as they are able to. With a couple of weeks before applications can be lodged, now is a very good time to be thinking about projects and sourcing quotes.

Solar is a home improvement that can provide great bang for buck. According to Energy Matters, a a 5.98kW solar panel and battery system installed in Darwin can return a financial benefit of up to nearly $2,500 a year; depending on installation and energy consumption specifics.

Among the eligibility criteria for the scheme, homes must be older than six months and projects must be completed within three months of receiving the voucher. Up to 50% of the voucher can be used towards the cost of goods and materials.

The scheme is part of the Territory government’s $22 million Immediate Works Stimulus Package.
