Battery System Rebates VIC

Battery-rebate-VIC

Battery systems are becoming increasingly popular in Victoria, Australia, as more and more homeowners look for ways to reduce their energy bills and carbon footprints. One way to encourage the installation of these systems is through rebates.

Rebates and incentives are available to Victorian homeowners who install a new battery system or upgrade their existing systems. The rebate is based on the size of the battery system, with larger systems receiving a higher rebate. The rebate is also based on the type of battery system, with lithium-ion systems receiving a higher rebate than lead-acid systems.

Solar battery loans in Victoria

Solar Victoria’s Solar Homes Program offers limited interest-free loans to help eligible homeowners slash the upfront cost of installing solar batteries. This program offers eligible homeowners up to $8,800 to offset the upfront cost of installing a solar battery, with repayments spread over four years.

By storing excess solar energy generated during the day, batteries allow households to power their homes at night and during peak periods, potentially slashing electricity bills and increasing reliance on clean, renewable energy.

There are specific criteria to meet:

  • Homeowner status: You must be the owner-occupier of an existing property where the system will be installed.
  • Income limit: Your combined household taxable income must be under $210,000 per year.
  • Property value: The property value must be under $3 million.
  • No prior battery rebate: The property cannot have received a previous solar battery rebate under the program. But if current customers have already obtained a rebate for solar panels (PV) and hot water, they are eligible to apply for an interest-free loan for solar batteries as owner-occupiers for the property they presently reside in.
  • Solar panel requirement: You must have an existing solar panel system with a minimum inverter capacity of 5kW or install one alongside the battery.
  • Authorised retailer: The installation must be completed by a Solar Victoria-authorised solar retailer.

These limited loans (4,500 available in 2023-24) are repaid over four years, potentially bringing your upfront costs down to zero.

Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

The Victorian Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program, launched in 2022, aims to revolutionise energy use by connecting households with solar panels and batteries into a virtual network. This network acts like a large-scale power plant, sharing excess solar energy during peak demand and drawing from the grid when needed.

Participants benefit from financial incentives for sharing their energy, reduced reliance on the grid, and potentially lower bills.

While the pilot program closed for new applications in December 2022, it continues to operate and evaluate its effectiveness until the end of 2024.

Other incentives

The rebates are designed to make it more affordable for homeowners to install these systems and to encourage more people to invest in renewable energy. The rebates can be combined with other incentives, such as the federal government’s Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) and the Victorian Energy Upgrades program.
